Young Island Town
Wharf 7 is on the hippest side of the island, where Charleston's best fitness, outdoor music events and sports are happening.
Officially part of the centuries-old City of Charleston, Daniel Island has only been developed as a town since the mid-1990s. That means everyone and everything on the 4,000-acre island are part of a fresh, smart take on Lowcountry life. It's easy to be a new face here.
Daniel Island is situated in the very center of the Charleston Lowcountry, with direct access to I-526, and edged by 23+ miles of waterfront along tidal rivers, marsh and creeks.
The once-rural island is home to a terrific mix of classic-mod architecture, tremendous greenspace and natural beauty (so many mature trees!), along with docks and boat ramps, 18 miles of trails and a walkable, well-rounded downtown—great restaurants, workplaces, eight parks, schools, and services. The island is a destination, too, for Volvo Stadium tennis, pro soccer at MUSC Health Stadium, festivals and big-name outdoor concerts (Hootie & the Blowfish, Zac Brown Band, Southern Ground Music & Food Festival).
The tech crowd got here early as software developer Blackbaud led as one of Daniel Island’s first corporate residents. Benefitfocus also has its headquarters on the island, and Boeing and the Charleston International Airport are within a dozen miles.
Workplaces in Mount Pleasant and North Charleston are also within a few miles’ drive, and some locals have given the nickname “Doctors Island” to Daniel Island because of the many medical professionals who have chosen to live here.
